The world isn't just getting hotter from human-caused global warming. It's getting stickier. It really is the humidity. ► McLean Lake (Whitehorse) Needs Our Help. The McLean Lake issue is in front of City Council again. On October 22, there will be a Public Hearing at City Hall on the latest application by Territorial Contracting to have part of Sleeping Giant Hill rezoned to Industrial Quarry, to allow for the construction of a heavy industrial concrete batch plant on the site. Come to the Public Hearing at City Council on October 22nd, 7:30 pm to support a message to the City of Whitehorse: “McLean Lake should be protected for the enjoyment of future generations” There are alternatives. Officials have found discharges from two now-abandoned mines — owned by RedCorp Ventures Ltd.– to be "acutely lethal". In accordance with the Waters Act, the Yukon Water Board gives notice of applications they have received for water use licences, to give the opportunity for any person who wishes to request that a public hearing be held regarding the application to submit a written request by the deadline given in the notice. ► THIS WEEK - Public meetings are being held in Whitehorse, and Carmacks to discuss Elk Management. The Whitehorse meeting will be held at the Yukon Inn Fireside Room at 7:00 p.m. on October 16th, 2007. The Carmacks meeting will be held at the Heritage Hall adjacent to the First Nation’s Office at 7:00 p.m. on October 15th, 2007. ► RETScreen International Clean Energy Project Analysis Software - Energy Efficiency RETScreen Version 4 Seminar. Canadian engineers, architects, technologists, planners, facility managers and educators are invited to a free RETScreen Version 4 introductory training seminar. The seminar is intended for these and other professionals who would like to learn how to use the RETScreen Clean Energy Project Analysis Software to assess the viability of energy efficiency measures for commercial, institutional and residential buildings, and for industrial facilities. Registration will be on a first-come-first-serve basis. ► Kluane National Park Visitor Centre Project – Resident survey. Kluane National Park and Reserve is updating its Visitor Centre in Haines Junction with new exhibits, visitor services and audio-visual programs. The budget for the renewal is $1million with the current anticipated opening of the new exhibits being the summer of 2010. To succeed at our goal of having a centre that better meets the needs of the community we need input from local area residents. Kluane National Park and Reserve is conducting a survey that asks a series of questions about the Visitor Centre. We want to know your opinions on the current centre and how we can make it a better place for you to visit in the future. Everyone is welcome to participate in the survey, regardless if you have visited the centre or not. If you complete a survey your name will be entered into a prize draw for a glacier flight for three passengers over Kluane National Park with Sifton Air. Tundra Swan marking in 2007. During the summer of 2007, USFWS and USGS cooperators once again fitted Tundra Swans in western Alaska with coded plastic neck bands to learn more about population-specific patterns of migration and winter destination. Please keep an eye out for these birds as they migrate through your region.
► Trumpeter Swan Society: Yukon Representation. It is mid-October and our wild swans are starting to think about bailing out for the winter. Anyone passionate about Trumpeter Swans, who wants to become more involved in an organization that is dedicated to this magnificent bird and the places it needs to live, you might want to consider joining and possibly becoming a Director of the Trumpeter Swan Society. At present there are only two members in the entire Yukon Territory... not nearly enough to look out for our growing swan population. Canadian Environment Awards are accepting Nominations for the 2008 Awards. The Canadian Environment Awards: A Celebration of Community Achievement is a national, bilingual program that recognizes individuals and groups of Canadians who have made outstanding contributions to the protection, restoration and preservation of the Canadian environment. The 30-day public comment period began on Sept 17th and ends Oct 17th, 2007. ► THIS WEEK - Seeking Nominations: of college, university, and/or graduate students to participate in a special session, dedicated to northern students and northern research policy, as part of the 8th International ACUNS Student Conference on Northern Studies, Saskatoon, SK, October 18-21, 2007. Northern students involved in this session will be asked to discuss; the obligations of northern researchers to the land and the people of the north and if these obligations are currently being fulfilled, and what should be done to improve the fulfillment of these obligations. We are seeking nomination of 8-10 eligible students representing all three territories to participant in this session. This session has been sponsored by the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation. ► DEADLINE THIS WEEK – Seeking Comments on United Nations (UN) Agricultural Assessment. Next January, governments around the world will meet in Nairobi, Kenya to discuss the future of agriculture. This is a unique opportunity to influence the direction of global agriculture for the coming generation. According to Greenpeace, governments will either “promote a failed, unsustainable model of industrial agriculture backed with toxic pesticides and uncontrolled genetically engineered crops, or support organic and sustainable farming practices.” Jointly sponsored by the UN and the World Bank, the draft report of International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development is now accepting comments until October 22nd. ► Call for Proposals for Training, Communications and Outreach projects in conjunction with International Polar Year. Innovative and creative proposals are being sought to help raise awareness about the Canadian Arctic, promote IPY and polar science and research, and provide training and skills development for Northerners, amongst other objectives. The Government of Canada Program for International Polar Year places important emphasis on engaging children and youth and wishes to encourage partnerships and collaborations in all aspects of its program. This Call for Proposals is intended to support activities and initiatives across the country, particularly in the North. Sustainable Northern Shelter in a World of Diminishing Resource, October 28 - 30, 2007, Fairbanks, Alaska. The Cold Climate Housing Research Center and the University of Alaska Fairbanks in Conjunction with the International Polar Year, will host the first of a planned series of biennial international conferences on circumpolar housing and community infrastructure issues. This forum presents an opportunity for an international group of builders, architects, building scientists and planners to discuss common challenges and exchange solutions to producing sustainable, appropriate and durable buildings and infrastructure in the circumpolar north. National DFO-ENGO Workshop on Fish Habitat. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together DFO officials and ENGOs involved in fish habitat stewardship to discuss fish habitat concerns and the implementation of DFO’s habitat management program. New - Living Oceans Society’s online model of oil spill scenarios on the B.C. coast. Living Oceans Society has released an online computer generated model that shows how oil spills would affect ecosystems and communities on the North Coast of British Columbia. The oil spill animation, built using leading edge computer modeling software and the most up to date oceanographic data available, is able to generate oil spill scenarios from oil tankers and drilling platforms in coastal waters. Living Oceans commissioned the development of this computer generated oil spill model in order to be able to better assess the potential impact of oil spills from proposed oil tanker traffic and/or oil drilling and exploration along the North Coast. Sustainability Within a Generation: A New Vision for Canada. This 52-page report outlines how Canada can become a world leader in sustainability by the year 2030. The report outlines how a long-term national plan with clear targets and timelines would generate less pollution and waste and improve the quality of life for all Canadians. The policy changes in Sustainability Within a Generation are simple and involve a common theme: making the market work better. For example, Canada still subsidizes polluting industries such as mining and oil exploration. Instead, Canada should use a preventative approach, which is less expensive than cleaning up after environmental degradation occurs. Our recommended legislative changes would make polluters pay and benefit good environmental performers, which would put Canada ahead both environmentally and economically. Published in 2005. ► Sunlight Eco-Action Kids Awards - National Environmental Kids Awards. The Sunlight Eco-Action Kids Awards is a nation-wide awards program that recognizes kids between the ages of six and 12 who are working to make an environmental difference in their communities. Youth across Canada are invited to enter by submitting a letter describing the actions they have taken to better the environment. The purpose of the awards is to give Canadian kids a chance to share their ideas and raise awareness about what any individual can do to help ensure the future health of our environment. The Awards are supported by key environmental organizations including Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS), Evergreen, the Pembina Institute, World Wildlife Fund Canada, Pollution Probe and Zerofootprint. Experts from these groups will act as judges. To enter, kids between the ages of six and 12 submit a letter outlining their contributions to helping protect the planet. Winners in three different age groups (6-7 years, 8-9 years and 10-12 years) will receive the title of ultimate Eco-Action Kid and join a community of young people investing their time and energy to protect the earth. ► THIS WEEK - October 19 - Earth Science Week International Polar Year (IPY) Videoconference. Middle and high school students and teachers are invited to participate in The Science of IPY, an interactive one-hour videoconference hosted by local science centers on October 19, 2007.
